Don’t jump from company to company

It’s been awhile since I don’t post anything. Crazy times, you know …

Although nowadays everything is so dynamic, I’d like to talk a bit about career and the bad thing about jumping from company to company within short periods.

These are different times. Some years ago a successful career was the one where you worked the whole active life in one company and get recognized by that.

Nowadays we live in the information era, everything is more accessible. I live in Brazil and work for a Netherlands’ company. Lot’s of companies across the world are looking for developers no matter where they live. I’ll not even mention that with the pandemic more and more remote jobs are appearing.

All these facts leads us to see more opportunities than existed before.

What you’ll read is something very important, mainly if you are starting your career.

Do not jump from company to company for each 3 or 4 months.

Here are reasons:

Companies don’t like professionals that don’t stay long enough

Serious companies want commitment, they look for a professional that will give its best and commit with the projects, and will not leave for any opportunity that appears. Anytime I’m analyzing a resume I’ll for sure check the professional history … not just me.

Professional maturity requires engagement

I believe, I saw and I lived it, that the professional growth comes with experiences. Whenever you work in a project for a longer time you will live that project, you will understand better the business around that, you will look for improvements, you will learn better how to deal with the customer/tester/ops/devs, you will learn how to deal with the most different problems. But for all these things to happen, you need to live it and it requires time.

Jumping from company to company will not help you. You’ll probably get a bit higher earning, but you won’t have enough time to live the project, feel the project problems and learn how to deal with it. Professionals that want to grow in their career must live all those experiences that a good project can bring you.

I’m not telling to stay 10 years on the same company, but switching company for each 3 months is not a good idea.
